Mutation Description "BLAST searches of NBCI genomes failed to recover complete or partial MC5R sequences for seven cetaceans (Balaena mysticetus [bowhead whale], Balaenoptera acutorostrata [common minke whale], Balaenoptera bonaerensis [Antarctic minke whale], Physeter macrocephalus [sperm whale], Lipotes vexillifer [baiji], Orcinus orca [killer whale], Tursiops truncatus [bottlenose dolphin]) and two pholidotans." (Manis pentadactyla [Chinese pangolin], M. javanica [Sunda pangolin])." 10.1016/j.ympev.2017.12.010
Phenotypic "Here, we show that MC5R has either been deleted from the genome or inactivated in multiple mammalian lineages that have lost their sebaceous glands or have degenerative sebaceous glands including fully aquatic cetaceans and West Indian manatee, pangolins, African elephant, and white rhinoceros." 10.1016/j.ympev.2017.12.010
Other "Assemblies for both pangolin genomes fail to link RNMT and MC2R in a single scaffold, leaving open the possibility that this region of the genome in Manis spp. remains unsequenced. However, SRA BLAST searches with a carnivoran MC5R query sequence (Panthera tigris) failed to recover any evidence for the presence of MC5R in Manis and instead recovered sequence reads for other melanocortin receptor genes." (MC3R, MC4R)." 10.1016/j.ympev.2017.12.010

Curator Observations

At time of publication complete genome scaffolds were not available for Manis species, however the more recently Manis genomes with complete coverage have been made available confirming the complete gene deletion.
